Gojinkasai (God Firing Festival)

16:00 - 20:00

This festival is held in Nasu every year on the fourth Sunday of May. Nasu is located in the largest volcanic belt in the country, and has resulted in many casualties during the past several eruptions. Neighboring villagers cleansed themselves to appease the mountain’s anger, and went to Nasu Wen-yuizen Shrine to ignite the fires of Hell to be worshipped as “the godfire”. Since then, it has become established as an event praying for five-grain-rich food and for each breath taken to be free of disease.
